Cooked here, not trucked in

Meals Included at Our Montrose Retirement Community

Cooked on site, three times a day, with more than one choice at every meal.

Communal dining room at Spring Creek Chalet in Montrose

How does dining work here?

Everything is cooked here and served in the communal dining room, three times a day. Menus rotate weekly and there is more than one choice at each meal, so residents aren't handed a tray with whatever was made that day. Snacks are available throughout the day.

When the garden and orchard are producing, the kitchen cooks with them. That's the practical link between the 20 acres and what ends up on the plate.

Can special diets be accommodated?

Yes — talk to us about specific dietary needs when you tour, and we'll tell you plainly what the kitchen can and can't do. Vegetarian and vegan meals have been accommodated for residents in the past.

Every apartment also has a kitchenette, so residents who want to make their own coffee, keep their own snacks or cook something themselves can.

Can family eat here when they visit?

Yes. Families are welcome at meals, and if you're touring the community we'd rather you stayed and ate than took our word for the food. It's the fastest way to tell whether a place is right.

Common questions

How many meals are included?

Three freshly made meals a day are included in the monthly rate, along with snacks available throughout the day. All meals are prepared on site by the community's own cooks rather than delivered, and they are served in the communal dining room where residents eat together.

Is there a choice at each meal?

Yes. Menus rotate weekly and each meal offers more than one option, so residents choose what they eat rather than being served a single set plate. If someone has a dietary need, raise it when you tour and we will tell you plainly what the kitchen can and cannot accommodate.

Can residents cook for themselves?

Yes. Every suite has its own kitchenette, so residents can make coffee in the morning, keep their own food and cook whenever they want to, even though three meals a day are already provided. Many residents use it mostly for snacks, tea and the occasional meal with a visiting grandchild.

Where does the food come from?

Meals are cooked on site rather than trucked in. When the season allows, the kitchen uses fruit from the orchard, vegetables from the garden and eggs from the chickens kept on the property. The rest is bought in, and menus are written fresh each week rather than repeating on a fixed cycle.
